In our increasingly globalized world, digital literacy has become a basic need for educational and economic mobility, not only a desire. India has undergone a significant digital transformation, but a monumental divide still exists within this realm. Students from underserved communities typically lack access to the technology i.e; relevant devices, reliable internet access, and sustainable training that can allow them to participate fully in the modern world. Without technology, accessing online learning, developing key skills, and being competitive for skilled jobs all become far more difficult.
As reported in January 2025 from the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar, while rural India now has more internet users (488 million) than urban India (397 million), this number is predicted to become 900 million in total, with most users coming from underserved areas. Many of these users access the internet using shared devices. This relates to the important issue of limited access and control over technology, preventing sustained learning and skill building. OpenTab is a social initiative founded to solve such specific challenges, alongside focusing on spreading awareness pertaining to safe and confident digital use in a constantly evolving world that is further impacted by the rise of artificial intelligence. Our goal is to simply attempt to make sure every student within our reach has the technological competence and access they need to create a responsible electronic future for themselves.Â
